Getting started guide for remote meeting participants and asynchronous collaborators

A practical guide to getting up to speed before you attend your first remote meeting or collaborate asynchronously in NodesNow

Updated over 2 months ago

Joining a NodesNow meeting remotely? As a remote participant at a NodesNow meeting, your primary tool is the desktop web app. It offers you the features of the touchscreen and contains integrated video conferencing - enabling you to interact with your collaborators as if you were in the same room.

Using the web app, you can share content to spaces, work directly on the canvas, and communicate with Microsoft Teams. This guide will walk you through each of these functions to ensure your first NodesNow meeting is comfortable and smooth.

Prerequisites

To follow along with this guide, you'll need to register for a NodesNow account using your email, or sign in with Google, Microsoft, or Apple. If you need help, see our sign-up tutorial.

To join a meeting, you'll need a space invitation. Typically, you'll get this in an email invite via NodesNow from the meeting facilitator. Or they will cut and paste the meeting details and share them with you. These include the space's IRL and PIN.

Note: If you already have a space invitation, you can skip ahead to step three.

1. Sign in and create a NodesNow space

Now that you have a NodesNow account, you're ready to start.

  1. Navigate to space.nodesnow.com and sign in.

  2. Once logged in, you'll be redirected to a space management dashboard.

  3. On your dashboard, click CREATE to launch a new space.

  4. Your newly created space will appear on the dashboard. Double click the space to open it.

2. Use the canvas toolbox

Now that you've created a space, let's walk through the canvas toolbox.

To use the drawing tool:

  1. Tap the pencil icon in the canvas's toolbox to open the drawing menu.

  2. Select a color from the available color palette, or use the default setting.

  3. Choose a line thickness or use the default setting.

  4. Click anywhere on the canvas to start drawing.

To move, duplicate, resize, and delete drawings and other items, use the selection tool:

After you have finished writing your writing, you can click it to open the text toolbox as demonstrated above. From there, you can also move, duplicate, resize, and delete it. See the section on the selection tool above for more details.

To add a shape to the canvas:

  • Select the shapes tool in the canvas's toolbox to open the shapes menu.

After you place a shape, you can click it to open the shapes menu. The shapes menu will allow you not only adding color to shapes, but also adding a border and a color border as well. You can also move, duplicate, resize, and delete it. See the section on the selection tool above for more details.

To upload an image or video to a space's canvas:

  1. Click the upload tool in the canvas toolbar - your operating system's file organizer will appear.

  2. In your file organizer, choose media that you want to upload. The desktop web allows uploading .jpg, .png, .gif and .mp4 files with a size limit of 100 MB per file.

Your files will be placed on the space's canvas. From there, you can also move, duplicate, resize, and delete them. See the section on the selection tool above for more details.

3. Use the space inbox and move content to the canvas

The space inbox serves as a repository for content shared by participants in a space. From here, you can bring the content for presentation on the canvas.

1. Open the space inbox

To open the space inbox:

  • Tap SHARED ITEMS at the middle right of the screen.

The app will launch a Shared Items sidebar which will display notes and media that participants have sent to the space.

2. Move a note to the canvas

  1. In the space inbox, tap and hold the note you want on the canvas.

  2. Drag it to your desired location on the canvas.

  3. Release it to place it.

From there, you can move or restyle the note (or media) as above in the section on the selection tool.

Note: Once moved to the canvas, content will disappear from the inbox.

4. Connect to the space's Microsoft Teams call

There are two ways to join a Microsoft Teams call: from within the NodesNow space or directly in Microsoft Teams. This guide shows how to join it within the NodesNow space. You can learn how to connect to the space directly in Microsoft Teams here.

  1. If you closed the space in the previous section of this guide, reopen it on your desktop browser.

  2. Select START TEAMS CALL on the top of the canvas.

That's it. You're in. To exit the call, click END MS TEAMS CALL.

If you'd like to see Teams in action in your space, click on the gear button then select Meeting Info to get a URL that people can use to join you.

5. End the session

When it's time to exit the space:

  • Tap WRAP UP AND LEAVE.

Tap Leave again and our space will be saved and you'll be taken to the NodesNow dashboard.

Congratulations! Now that you've learned all the ways to interact in NodesNow spaces as a remote meeting participant and asynchronous collaborator, you're ready to contribute to more engaging, productive meetings.
